What is your Bio-Age? How EGYM determines your biological age
Calendar age versus biological age
Two people aged 55 can be worlds apart physically. One is strong, supple and fit; the other is losing strength and gets out of breath more quickly. Your calendar age says little about that. Your biological age does: it describes how your body is functioning right now. You cannot change your calendar age, but you can change your biological age — with the right training, your Bio-Age can go down.
How does EGYM measure your Bio-Age?
Your Bio-Age is calculated from measurements taken during the Health Check: your muscle strength on the EGYM equipment, your cardio fitness (via a short bike test that gives an indication of your oxygen uptake), your flexibility and mobility, and your body composition (the ratio between fat mass and muscle mass). These values are summarised in one understandable number: your Bio-Age. At Fit Square we repeat the measurement every six weeks, so you can see your progress in black and white.
Why is this useful?
A number on the scale says little. You can lose weight and still lose muscle mass — which is unfavourable. Bio-Age looks at the complete picture and gives you a concrete, motivating goal: lowering your biological age. For many people that works better than "losing weight" or "getting fitter".
Can you really lower your Bio-Age?
Yes. Strength training in particular has a big effect, because muscle mass is one of the strongest predictors of vitality later in life. By training 30 minutes two to three times a week you improve your strength, cardio fitness and body composition, and your Bio-Age drops as a result. Our physiotherapists guide you along the way, and the EGYM equipment automatically adjusts your training plan as you get stronger.
